80s Buildup (2023) Movie Review: Masala Mayhem or Missed Opportunity?

Can a Kamal vs. Rajini war survive a family reunion, clueless criminals, and a drag queen grandma? Buckle up for 80s Buildup, a wild ride through Tamil cinema's quirks and cracks.

Kathir, a Kamal fan and self-proclaimed Casanova, is challenged to woo a pretty relative at his grandpa's funeral. Sounds simple, right? Wrong! Add in a motley crew of wannabe thieves, a cross-dressing hospital worker, a lecherous father, and a whole lot of family drama, and you've got a masala potpourri ready to boil over.

This film isn't a shy one. It embraces the tropes of Tamil cinema with open arms, from the larger-than-life characters to the punchline-heavy dialogues. But 80s Buildup tries to twist them too, with a drag queen grandma and a commentary on fan rivalry. Does it work? Well...

Santhanam's comedic timing is undeniable, and he throws himself into the role with gusto. His expressions are a masterclass in physical comedy, and the one-liners (some witty, some groan-worthy) come flying fast. But the humor relies heavily on slapstick and double entendres, which might not land with everyone.

The film tries to balance the laughs with some emotional depth, exploring themes of family, legacy, and the burden of expectations. However, these moments feel underdeveloped, lost in the comedic chaos.

Santhanam shines, owning the screen with his trademark energy. Sangeetha holds her own as the feisty sister, and Mayilsamy provides some welcome comic relief. However, some of the supporting characters fall into caricature, with over-the-top acting that feels more dated than nostalgic.

The film's biggest flaw is its uneven pacing. The jokes come thick and fast, but the story struggles to keep up. Some subplots feel like afterthoughts, and the emotional core of the film never quite takes flight.

The vibrant colors and energetic camerawork capture the essence of Tamil cinema. The music score is full of catchy tunes that perfectly complement the mood, from the playful to the dramatic.

80s Buildup is a fun, chaotic ride with moments of genuine humor and heart. However, its overstuffed plot, uneven pacing, and reliance on familiar tropes hold it back from being a truly memorable masala masterpiece.
