A Slice of Life: 90's - A Middle Class Biopic (2024) Review : Warms the Heart and Tickles the Funny Bone

Remember the creak of the ceiling fan? The fuzzy warmth of a CRT television? The crackling joy of a cassette rewinding? "90's - A Middle Class Biopic" takes you back to a simpler time, a time where happiness simmered in the everyday moments of a middle-class family. It's a tapestry woven with laughter, tears, and the unyielding spirit of a generation striving for a better tomorrow.

The story unfolds without a grand narrative arc, instead focusing on the everyday moments that make up a middle-class life. We see Chandrashekhar juggling his demanding job with the joys and challenges of fatherhood. Shoba, the ever-supportive wife, navigates the household with grace and wit. Raghu, the responsible eldest, dreams of a brighter future. Divya, the sassy middle child, grapples with teenage angst. And Aditya, the youngest, brings a touch of chaos and laughter to the family.

The beauty of "90's" lies in its authenticity. The script feels like a lived-in experience, filled with relatable characters and situations. The 90s nostalgia is palpable, from the iconic music and fashion choices to the references to bygone technologies and social trends. The series doesn't shy away from the struggles of middle-class life, but it balances them with heartwarming moments of love, laughter, and family unity.

The performances are uniformly excellent. Sivaji delivers a nuanced portrayal of Chandrashekhar, capturing his warmth, humor, and occasional exasperation. Vasuki Anand shines as Rani, the rock of the family. The young actors playing Raghu, Divya, and Aditya bring a fresh energy and charm to the screen. Their sibling dynamics are particularly well-written and acted, with squabbles, secrets, and unwavering love forming the foundation of their relationship.

Director Aditya Haasan deserves praise for creating a visually evocative and emotionally resonant series. The cinematography seamlessly blends nostalgic elements with a modern sensibility, capturing the warmth of the family home and the bustling streets of the 90s. The background score, a mix of classic 90s tunes and original compositions, perfectly complements the story.

"90's - A Middle Class Biopic" is not without its flaws. Some may find the pacing a bit slow, and the episodic nature of the story might not appeal to everyone. However, these minor shortcomings are easily overshadowed by the series' warmth, humor, and emotional depth.

"90's" is a delightful and heartwarming series that will resonate with anyone who remembers the 90s or simply enjoys a good story about family, love, and the little things in life. It's a reminder that even the most ordinary lives are filled with extraordinary moments, and that laughter and love can overcome any obstacle. So settle in, and prepare to be transported back to a simpler time when family was everything and the future held endless possibilities.
