Ankush (2023) Movie Review: Predictable Melody In a Crowded Genre

Ankush, our bright and endearing protagonist, navigates the choppy waters of college life. Balancing middle-class dreams with the sting of poverty, he faces the sneers of rich kids and the allure of a local Robin Hood figure, Bhosle Bhai. Enter Ravi, a girl smitten by Ankush's gentle nature, adding a sweet twist to his already complex world. But when a college brawl spills over, Ankush finds himself caught in the crossfire of rival gangs, forcing him to make choices that test his very core.

Ankush shines with Deepraj's genuine portrayal, perfectly capturing the vulnerability and resilience of youth wrestling with life's harsh realities. Ketaki Mategaonkar as Ravi brings a refreshing mix of strength and charm, while Mangesh Desai and Sayaji Shinde add muscle and menace as the warring gang leaders. Each character, big or small, contributes to the tapestry of Ankush's world, painting a vivid picture of a society grappling with class divides and moral dilemmas.

At its heart, Ankush grapples with the age-old conflict between good and evil, woven through the lens of societal pressures and economic disparity. The film asks pertinent questions: how far does one go to protect their loved ones? Can kindness survive in a world fueled by violence? These themes resonate deeply, sparking introspection and leaving the audience pondering long after the credits roll.

Director Nishant Natharam Dhapse deftly blends realistic grit with moments of heartwarming tenderness. The cinematography captures the raw energy of college life, while the score subtly underscores the emotional undercurrents. While the narrative takes familiar genre tropes, it imbues them with a relatable Marathi touch, making Ankush feel both fresh and grounded.

Deepraj is the undeniable star, his expressive eyes and understated mannerisms conveying Ankush's internal struggles with remarkable accuracy. Ketaki Mategaonkar shines as the girl who refuses to be just another damsel in distress, adding a spark of strength to the narrative. The supporting cast delivers equally commendable performances, adding depth and texture to the story.

Like a diamond rough around the edges, Ankush occasionally stumbles into predictability. Certain plot points unfold in familiar territory, and the climax, while thrilling, might leave some viewers wanting more. Despite these minor hiccups, the film's emotional core and engaging performances keep the audience invested till the very end.

Ankush is a captivating journey through the struggles of a young man caught between hope and despair. While not entirely groundbreaking, it is a well-told story with relatable characters and timely themes. Deepraj's performance is a gem, and the film's exploration of morality in a harsh world offers plenty of food for thought. If you're looking for a movie that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you contemplate the choices we make, Ankush is worth a watch.
