Constable Girpade (2023) Review: A Quirky Cop, Chaotic Capers, and a Masala Movie You Can't Refuse!

Remember that childhood dream of becoming a cop and nabbing bad guys? Constable Girpade takes it a step further, adding a generous dose of Mumbai mayhem, family drama, and first love fumbles to the mix. Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride through this masala cop caper that's as light-hearted as a vada pav and as twisty as a Marine Lines chor bazaar alley.

Forget chasing bank robbers – Constable Mandaar "Girpade" Ghorpade's first beat is a posh Mumbai neighborhood crawling with eccentric millionaires and their outlandish problems. Think lost Persian kittens, runaway diamond necklaces, and yoga gone wrong – it's enough to make a rookie cop's mustache twitch. But amidst the absurdity, there's a burning mission: catching Phenyl Mohan, the city's most flamboyant (and disguised) criminal, a ghost who haunts Girpade's past.

Our rookie cop is as green as a freshly minted chutney. Khushaal Pawaar plays Girpade with wide-eyed earnestness and bumbling charm, making him the endearing underdog you can't help but root for. His strict-yet-quirky Sub Inspector boss (Vrajesh Hirjee) throws in the masala, their cop-boss dynamic ping-ponging between exasperated sighs and laugh-out-loud moments. Neel Salekar steps in as Girpade's supportive best friend, the voice of reason in this whirlwind of chaos. And then there's Chandni Bhabhda, the love interest who adds a dash of sweetness (and a sprinkle of girl-next-door sass) to this spicy concoction.

Director Saad Khan, known for his quirky rom-coms, whips up a laugh-a-minute feast with witty dialogues and slapstick situations. Think "Andaz Apna Apna" meets "Golmaal," with a dash of social commentary on Mumbai's elite. But don't be fooled by the lightheartedness – there's an undercurrent of grief and ambition simmering beneath the surface, adding depth and emotional heft to the narrative.

The cast sinks their teeth into their roles with relish. Pawaar's Girpade is endearingly awkward, Hirjee's boss is a scene-stealer with his deadpan expressions, and Bhabhda's charm shines through. Even the cameos are spot-on, adding unexpected bursts of flavor to the cinematic dish.

Is it perfect? No, there are pacing issues here and there, and some jokes miss the mark. But like that extra dollop of ghee on your dosa, these flaws add to the film's charm. It's unapologetically masala, embracing Bollywood tropes with a wink and a nudge, celebrating the larger-than-life in a way that's both familiar and refreshing.

"Constable Girpade" is a fun, heartwarming, and surprisingly layered film that will leave you with a smile and a head full of Mumbai mayhem. It's the perfect popcorn entertainer for a family night in, a reminder that sometimes, the most masala stories are the ones closest to home. So grab your chai, settle in, and get ready for a cop caper that's as desi as it gets!
