Hanu Man (2024) Movie Review: Superhero Soars from Mythology to Modernity

Rising from the ashes of ancient legends, "Hanuman" blasts into theaters, a visual spectacle reimagining the beloved Hindu deity for a contemporary audience. Set in the fictional town of Anjanadri, the film follows Hanumanthu (Teja Sajja), an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Bestowed with the powers of the mythical Hanuman, he must rise to the challenge of protecting his community from a power-hungry villain and embrace his destiny as a superhero.

Director Prasanth Varma takes a bold gamble by grounding the mythical in the everyday. Hanumanthu's journey starts not with soaring leaps or cosmic battles, but with grappling with the weight of newfound powers and their impact on his ordinary life. This initial arc, while well-paced, suffers from tonal inconsistencies, veering between light comedy and weighty self-discovery. However, Varma redeems himself in the second half, where the fantastical elements seamlessly intertwine with Hanumanthu's personal struggles, culminating in a visually stunning climax that pays homage to the Ramayana without feeling derivative.

Teja Sajja shines as Hanumanthu, capturing the character's naivety and gradual transformation into a hero with equal charm and conviction. Amritha Aiyer provides solid support as his love interest, while Varalaxmi Sarathkumar show as chewing the scenery with relish. The supporting cast, including Raj Deepak Shetty and Vinay Rai, deliver competent performances, but ultimately fade in the shadow of the central trio.

Hanu Man's budget constraints are evident in some VFX sequences, but the team utilizes what they have with admirable creativity. The CGI, while not on par with Hollywood blockbusters, effectively conveys the scale and spectacle of Hanuman's powers. The cinematography is particularly noteworthy, capturing the sun-drenched beauty of Anjanadri and the awe-inspiring vastness of the celestial realm.

Hanu Man is not a flawless film. The narrative stumbles at times, and the occasional tonal shifts can be jarring. However, it soars on its ambition, its visual splendor, and the genuine charm of its lead performance. For those seeking a superhero film with a distinct Indian flavor and a dash of mythological grandeur, Hanu Man is a worthwhile journey.

So, should you see it? If you're a fan of superhero movies with a twist, or have a penchant for mythological retellings, then definitely give Hanu Man a chance. It might not be the smoothest flight, but the view from the top is certainly worth the ride.
