Love and laughter meet a mythical twist in Happy Ending, a Telugu rom-com that hits the theatres leaving audiences with a bittersweet aftertaste. While the film boasts an intriguing premise and promising performances, its execution falters, ultimately delivering a comedy that's more lukewarm than laugh-out-loud hilarious.
The story revolves around Harsh (Yash Puri), a young man cursed by a godman in his childhood. The curse? Anyone he gets physically close to dies. This fantastical setup leads to hilarious (and sometimes awkward) situations as Harsh navigates life and love, desperately trying to avoid his deadly touch. Enter Avani (Apoorva Rao), the free-spirited woman who captures Harsh's heart. Their romance forms the crux of the narrative, with the curse posing a constant obstacle to their happiness.
Yash Puri delivers a charming performance as the hapless Harsh, effectively conveying his desperation and vulnerability. Newcomer Apoorva Rao holds her own opposite Puri, showcasing a spunky and independent persona. However, the supporting cast, despite seasoned actors like Ajay Ghosh and Vishnu Oi, feels underdeveloped due to an uneven script.
The film's biggest weakness lies in its inconsistent tone. The comedic moments, while occasionally amusing, often fall flat due to their predictable nature and reliance on slapstick humor. The emotional core, intended to tug at heartstrings, suffers from underdeveloped subplots and rushed character development. The result is a film that struggles to find its comedic or dramatic footing, leaving the audience wanting more depth and impact.
Director Kowshik Bheemidi's vision shines through in some visually striking scenes, but the overall filmmaking lacks the punch needed to elevate the narrative. The soundtrack, composed by Ravi Nidamarthy Madhura, is catchy but fails to leave a lasting impression.
Happy Ending had the potential to be a hilarious and heartwarming exploration of love and destiny. However, its uneven execution, predictable humor, and underdeveloped emotional core prevent it from reaching its full potential. While Puri and Rao's performances are commendable, they can't single-handedly save the film. If you're looking for a lighthearted comedy with a fantastical twist, "Happy Ending" might offer a few chuckles. But for those seeking a deeper emotional connection or side-splitting laughter, this film might leave you feeling a little shortchanged.
