Irugapatru (2023) Movie Review: Three Couples, One Big Mirror. Unpacks the Bumps in the Road to Happily Ever After

Forget Cupid's arrows, "Irugapatru" throws reality checks like love grenades! This Tamil film dives headfirst into the messy world of relationships, showcasing three couples grappling with the "happily ever after" blues. Prepare for witty dialogues, relatable struggles, and an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you pondering your own love life (don't worry, therapy jokes included!).

Meet Mitra and Manohar, the picture-perfect couple. She's a psychologist fixing other people's relationships, while he's her free-therapy guinea pig. But is their facade actually masking cracks? Enter Rangesh and Pavithra, your typical modern-day duo – stressed at work, drowning in EMIs, and navigating post-baby weight woes. Sparks fly (of the angry kind) as frustration boils over, and Pavithra becomes the unfortunate punching bag. Then there's Arjun and Divya, fresh-faced and in love, but with hidden aspirations that threaten to disrupt their honeymoon phase.

"Irugapatru" doesn't shy away from breaking Bollywood rom-com clichés. Instead, it throws in relatable struggles we all face – communication breakdowns, financial pressures, and the constant battle to balance individual dreams with couple goals. You'll laugh, you'll cringe, you'll see yourself reflected in their messy lives, wondering, "Are these my struggles too?"

Shraddha Srinath as the therapist-with-issues is a revelation. Her nuanced expressions and pitch-perfect sarcasm nail the complex character. Vikram Prabhu brings his charming goofiness to Manohar, making him surprisingly endearing despite his flaws. The supporting cast shines too, especially Abarnathi as the exasperated wife and Sri as the lovelorn journalist.

The film isn't flawless. The pacing flags at times, and some scenes could be trimmed. But these are minor cracks in a gem that sparkles with honesty and humor. "Irugapatru" doesn't preach, it simply reflects. It invites you to laugh at your own relationship quirks, ponder your communication gaps, and maybe, just maybe, reach out for that hand holding yours a little tighter.

This film is a must-watch for anyone who's ever loved, fought, or dreamed in a relationship. It's funny, thought-provoking, and surprisingly relatable. "Irugapatru" doesn't just entertain, it leaves you reflecting on your own happily ever after, flaws and all. So grab your popcorn, hold your partner's hand (or maybe reach for the phone to mend bridges!), and dive into this messy, beautiful world of love and (mis)communication.
