Mansion 24 (2023) Review: Haunted by Secrets, Not Just Ghosts

Mansion 24, Ohmkar's latest offering, is not your average ghost flick. It's a chilling whodunit wrapped in a paranormal cloak, served with a dash of family drama and a sprinkle of Telugu folklore.

Amrutha, a feisty investigative journalist, embarks on a quest to clear her father's name. Accused of treason and theft, he vanished within the ominous walls of an abandoned mansion. But rumors whisper of a curse: whoever enters, never leaves. Undeterred, Amrutha plunges into the mansion's grimy depths, unearthing not just cobwebs and ghosts, but a tangled web of secrets that threaten to unravel her own reality.

Mansion 24 doesn't shy away from twisting familiar tropes. The haunted mansion setting is reimagined as a historical puzzle box, steeped in the mysteries of ancient artifacts and forgotten legacies. The film's strength lies in its ability to weave suspense with emotional depth, exploring themes of family ties, betrayal, and the weight of history.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar shines as Amrutha, her fiery spirit battling both fear and grief. Rao Ramesh and Satya Raj deliver nuanced performances as the enigmatic caretaker and Amrutha's supportive uncle, respectively. The supporting cast, including Avika Gor and Bindhu Madhavi, adds layers of intrigue and humor.

Ohmkar, known for his quirky horror comedies, injects a surprising dose of emotional resonance into Mansion 24. The cinematography is atmospheric, effectively capturing the mansion's decaying grandeur and lurking shadows. The score seamlessly blends haunting melodies with suspenseful crescendos, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

While the film excels in its core narrative, some pacing issues and predictable jump scares hold it back from reaching its full potential. The occasional predictable trope, a few underdeveloped characters, and a climax that, while satisfying, could have packed a bit more punch. The exploration of regional folklore feels slightly underdeveloped, leaving viewers wanting more.

Mansion 24 is a chilling and thought-provoking journey, offering more than just spooky thrills. It delves into the complexities of family, the burden of the past, and the courage it takes to face them. While not without flaws, the film's captivating performances, intriguing plot, and thematic depth make it a worthy addition to your horror watchlist.
