Shaitaan (2024) Movie Review: Is it Divine Intervention or Demonic Possession? Find Out Now!

Shaitaan (2024) Movie Review: Short Version

Shaitaan is a chilling descent into the depths of human vulnerability and the potential for darkness to lurk within seemingly ordinary lives. The film, directed by Vikas Bahl, boasts a powerhouse cast, including the ever-reliable Ajay Devgn and the captivating R Madhavan. Though it is a remake of a Gujarati film Vash (2023), makers tried to recreate another version for Hindi audience.

The film boasts a stellar cast. Ajay Devgn, known for his intense portrayals, embodies the desperation of a father fighting to save his family. R Madhavan takes a sharp turn, leaving behind his charming persona to become the chillingly enigmatic Vanraj, whose motives embodies the film's title – Shaitaan (evil). Jyotika's return to Hindi cinema is powerful, showcasing a mother's fierce love in the face of unimaginable horror.

The film centers around a seemingly ordinary family whose idyllic life takes a nightmarish turn. The arrival of a mysterious stranger, Vanraj, throws their world into chaos, and the line between reality and the supernatural blurs. The true scene-stealers are Madhavan and Janki Bodiwala delivers a nuanced performance that shifts seamlessly between a terrified child and a puppet controlled by an unseen force. Directorial choices create a palpable sense of unease. The use of muted tones and flickering shadows heightens the tension, while the camera lingers on unsettling details, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The first half excels at building suspense. The eerie atmosphere, the unsettling music by Amit Trivedi, and the slow unraveling of Vanraj's motives keep you glued to the screen. However, some might feel the second half a falter. Writer Aamil Keeyan Khan seems to struggle to maintain the momentum, leaving some plot points underdeveloped and the overall explanation for Vanraj's actions a little unclear.

The phenomenal performances, particularly by Madhavan & Bodiwala, and the initial suspenseful build-up are undeniable. However, the second half's weaknesses and a somewhat predictable climax may leave you wanting more. Shaitaan isn't just about thrills and chills, though. It explores the depths of human resilience and the lengths we'll go to protect those we love. It compels us to question the power of belief and the darkness that can lurk within the human heart.

Do you dare enter the world of Shaitaan? This film is a cinematic experience that will grip you, unsettle you, and leave you pondering the darkness that lies just beneath the surface. So, grab your popcorn, dim the lights, and prepare to be enthralled (or terrified). Just remember, some shadows are best left unexplored.
