Shastry Viruddh Shastry (2023) Movie Review: A Tug-of-War Between Roots and Dreams

Seven-year-old Yaman's idyllic life in Panchgani, nestled in the lap of grandparents Manohar and Urmila, takes a dramatic turn when his parents' career aspirations in Mumbai clash with family ties. With a proposed US relocation looming, a custody battle ignites, pitting parental ambitions against ancestral reverence. This is Shastry Viruddh Shastry - a poignant exploration of family, belonging, and the tug-of-war between roots and dreams.

The film reframes the custody narrative through the lens of a child's emotional turmoil, creating a unique and poignant perspective. It beautifully captures the essence of family values and intergenerational conflicts within Indian society, resonating with a global audience. It oscillates between heartwarming moments and courtroom confrontations, offering a captivating emotional rollercoaster.

The film delves into the often-untold story of grandparents raising a child, their love a fierce and unwavering shield against the uncertainties of life. The film weaves a rich tapestry of Indian culture, from the serene landscapes of Panchgani to the bustling chaos of Mumbai, each scene pulsating with familiar sights and sounds.

Kabir Pahwa as Yaman, delivers a remarkably nuanced performance, conveying the confusion, fear, and yearning of a child caught in the crossfire. Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni as Manohar and Urmila, The veteran actors breathe life into the grandparents, their expressions and body language speaking volumes about their love and unwavering commitment to their grandson. Shiv Panditt and Mimi Chakraborty as Malhar and Mallika, parents portray the complexities of balancing parental love with ambition, adding depth to the emotional tapestry.

But like any gem, Shastry Viruddh Shastry isn't flawless. The pacing occasionally stumbles, and some plot points feel predictable. The music score, while evocative, occasionally overpowers the dialogue. However, these are mere pebbles on the path of a profound journey.

Shastry Viruddh Shastry is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that delves into the complexities of family dynamics and the universal struggle between personal aspirations and cultural heritage. While not without its flaws, the film shines with its powerful performances, heartwarming humor, and exploration of a unique perspective on a familiar theme.
