Tholvi F.C. (2023) Movie Review: Sharaf U Dheen's Team of Misfits Takes on Life's Big Game

"Tholvi F.C." is here to caffeinate your dreams with a heartwarming blend of family, football, and the occasional cryptocurrency hiccup. Buckle up for a joyous ride with the Kuruvilas, a family where ambition comes in different sizes, but laughter always fits perfectly.

Sharaf U Dheen's Oommen dreams of a tea empire, while his brother Thambi (played by the director himself, George Kora) aims for a different kind of brewing – on the football field with his ragtag team of kids. Meanwhile, their parents, Kuruvila and Shoshamma, are navigating their own storms, from lost savings to literary aspirations.

But don't be fooled by the lighthearted premise. This film tackles failure with a gentle touch, reminding us that sometimes, detours become the most scenic routes to success. Kuruvila's tumble from riches to chai-walla is more hilarious than humiliating, and Shoshamma's writer's block is punctuated by moments of poignant self-discovery.

Where "Tholvi F.C." truly shines is in its celebration of community. The film's heart beats in the camaraderie of the football team, a motley crew of kids united by their love for the game and their infectious enthusiasm. Mariyam's (Meenakshi Raveendran) arrival adds a spark of romance and a fresh perspective to Thambi's world, proving that even on the sidelines, dreams can find their own goals.

Performances are aces across the board. Sharaf U Dheen is a bundle of nervous energy as the ambitious Oommen, while George Kora brings a quiet charm to the role of dreamer-turned-coach. Johny Antony and Asha Madathil weave humor and tenderness into their portrayal of a couple weathering the storms of life together. The kids – the real champions of the film – are pure joy, their expressions radiating the unbridled hope and optimism that only youth can hold.

Of course, no gem is flawless. The occasional pacing hiccup doesn't dampen the film's spirit, and the resolution, while heartwarming, might feel a tad too convenient for some. But "Tholvi F.C." doesn't shy away from embracing its own quirks, incorporating charmingly over-the-top acting choices and playful camera angles that add to the film's unique Indian masala.

The music score, a blend of peppy beats and introspective melodies, seamlessly complements the narrative, while the visuals, from the bustling streets of Kochi to the lush green football field, evoke a sense of familiarity and comfort.

So, should you watch "Tholvi F.C."? Absolutely! It's a delightful cinematic chai, sweet and warm, laced with humor, heart, and a touch of football frenzy. This is a film that celebrates the underdog, reminds us that sometimes the greatest victories are fought within ourselves, and proves that even a dream with shaky knees can still score a spectacular goal.

This film is a feel-good fiesta for the family, perfect for an afternoon escape with a mug of something warm and a box of tissues (for happy tears, of course!). So go grab your tickets, gather your loved ones, and get ready to cheer for the Kuruvilas as they prove that even in defeat, there's always a win waiting to happen. And who knows, maybe their story will inspire you to kick-start your own dreams, one sip, one step, one goal at a time.
